We had 355 birds for our Winter show held in our usual venue in Plymouth. Great to see so many smiling faces from far and wide and a few new breeds I have not seen at our show before.

We had an interesting visitor to the show, a young lady called Alexandre Pollard from Cardif University who is studying a birds vision. Alex e mailed me to explain which is below:

Thanks for letting me take the pics, they've come out really well. I've attached
some that I used to take measurements from. The pigeon with the best eyesight in
low light is the Lahore and the one with the worst is the Volga.

My research investigates how birds see and how their behaviour is affected by
their vision. I have collected a lot of eye pictures of over 80 species from
around the world. These photos enable me to calculate how much light gets to the
retina, non-invasively, and I can there compare the differences between each
species. Looking at breeds of pigeons is interesting as I can compare the
variability in visual ability within one species and between different breeds.
Other research involves looking at how birds have a preference for left or right
eye in tasks, how street lights affect birds singing, foraging and breeding
behaviours and comparing retinas of different species.
